You can find great dining options on every coast of Barbados (yes, even the north coast, where the Animal Flower Cave Restaurant does amazing sea cat). However, it may surprise you to learn that the island’s serene East Coast actually has some of the most interesting and imaginative options, from an eco-friendly restaurant driven by a passion for sustainability, to an authentic Southern Italian restaurant conveniently located in a luxury resort, to a little hideaway that doubles as an art gallery and does delightful cakes.
Eco Lifestyle + Lodge, Bathsheba
Nestled on a hill above the beautiful Bathsheba beach on the East Coast is the eco-friendly, boutique hotel Eco Lifestyle + Lodge. Its restaurant offers scrumptious meals that are perfect for the vegan traveller, or anyone looking to eat an inventive meal that’s also healthy, with an organic and mostly plant-based menu. Before going it’s best to call and make a reservation in advance.
Deeble’s Point Art Gallery and Café, Industry Hall
Tucked away on the South East Coast in St. Philip, approximately halfway between Beach Houses by Crane Resorts and Bottom Bay Beach, is a café named after the jagged cliff-face Deeble’s Point just beyond the restaurant. A hidden gem, even to some of the locals in the parish, Deeble’s Café offers some great café delights with fantastic cakes being the highlight. The café is also filled with wonderful art and offers great service with the warmth of a home-like setting.
L’Azure Restaurant, The Crane Resort
The setting is breathtaking with spectacular cliff views of the Crane Beach and the Atlantic, and the food is incredible as well. L’Azure is perfect for a stylish and filling breakfast, or a sophisticatedly hearty lunch. For breakfast you will find a wide selection of options with something for everyone, including the vegan, the individual who simply wants a continental breakfast and also the meat-lover. As for the setting, you can look forward to lots of cool white tones with stone white-washed walls, white chairs and table covers.
Pro tip: Try the Gospel Buffet Breakfast on Sundays. Hearing the choir sing while looking out onto the Atlantic Ocean is a remarkable experience.
D’Onofrio’s Trattoria, The Crane Resort
D’Onofrio’s is a family-friendly restaurant boasting excellent Southern Italian fare. A restaurant in the heart of the Crane Village, they do an excellent pizza, the linguine agli scampi is mouthwateringly good and the gnocchi gamberi is both delicious and hearty. The service and the setting are casual, friendly and will put you at ease. We highly recommend you try the risotto, but we won’t be held responsible for your future obsession with it.
Zen Restaurant, The Crane Resort
A perennial favourite that’s also well-loved by visitors and locals alike, Zen is not just the best restaurant on the East Coast but is one of the best on the island overall. The ambiance is unmatched, with stunning night-time views of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – Crane Beach. The restaurant offers Thai and Japanese cuisine, with the sushi being of especial note. At Zen you can choose between intimate booths for privacy, or dine at the sushi bar, or book as a group in the Tatami Room.
